Have you got a cold? Homeopathy could help! | 11 homeopathic cold remedies and preventatives

Homeopathic cold remedies - honey.

During the Autumn and Winter months, you’re lucky if you manage to dodge the dreaded lurgy. If you pick up a nasty bug, then there are homeopathic cold remedies that you can try. Better still, you could try some of these techniques before you catch anything, to keep your immune system in tip-top condition.

It’s likely that you’ll have some of these homeopathic medicines in the house already, so it may save you some cash on OTC medicines to boot. Let’s take a look at the different treatment options, that you could make yourself at home.

1) Eucalyptus can be a great remedy

This herb is known to calm coughs and decrease mucus. Put a few drops of eucalyptus oil into boiling water and inhale the steam. It should help to clear your airways.

2) Honey and lemon – to soothe your sore throat

This is one of those remedies that gets discussed a lot. And for good reason! Honey and lemon is great for treating a cold. You just mix honey, with lemon with hot water. The hot drink will soothe you and the honey will coat your throat and and protect it from further irritation. Honey also has anti-inflammatory properties that decrease inflammation and swelling.

3) Elderberry will boost your immune system

Elderberry should give your immune system a boost and shorten the duration of your cold. Take a tablespoon of elderberry syrup every four hours, to treat your symptoms.

If, like me, you don’t regularly have a bunch of elderberries in your kitchen, then I’d suggest that you invest in a bottle of Sambucol Natural Black Elderberry medicine. This is a homeopathic immune support supplement, that contains 100s of black elderberries.

This is one homeopathic remedy  that I wouldn’t be without and children over 3 can use it too; I often put a spoonful in my son’s cup of Vimto! If you do buy some, make sure you read the label yourself for instructions.

4) Salt water – it will ease sore throat symptoms

Gargling salt water may help to reduce your cold symptoms, by easing a sore throat and nasal congestion. It can also help to prevent upper respiratory infections too.

If you’re looking for a herb to reduce chest congestion, then reach for the thyme. It should help to shorten the duration of your cold. Make a tea of it, by adding a tablespoon of dried or fresh herbs and adding hot water. Leave it to brew for around 15 minutes.

6) Ginger – not just for sickness

Ginger can help to relieve different conditions. If you feel sick, or you have an upset tummy, then ginger can help ward of feelings of sickness. That’s one of the reasons why it’s recommended to pregnant women experiencing morning sickness.

This herb can also be very helpful if you have a cold. If you have a sore throat, nasal congestion, sickness, or a cough, then try adding some ginger to a smoothie. Alternatively, try adding a couple of slices of ginger to hot water.

A warm bath can help to relieve your cold symptoms. Epsom salt is a naturally occurring mineral salt that will relax your muscles and relieve pain in your shoulders, neck, back and head.

I know I’m pushing things to include chicken soup in a list of homeopathic cold remedies and I’m sure that homeopath purist would not be happy, but bear with me here. As well as being soothing, chicken soup is full of natural goodness that should give your system a boost. If you have a meat-free diet, or you don’t like chicken soup, then have a vegetable-rich soup as an alternative.
